Text Box: 75th Anniversary celebration gets underway!

Sons have reason to celebrate this year. It was in 1932 that The American Legion voted to create the Sons of The American Legion. While there have been ups and downs over the past 75 years, there are currently more than 307,000 S.A.L. members in more than 5,500 squadrons in all 50 states and nine foreign countries. From humble beginnings, Sons now donate millions of dollars and contribute millions of man-hours each year to American Legion programs and local charities across the nation. “The 2007 membership year will be a great milestone in the life of the Sons of The American Legion,” says J.R. Stillwell, who is a Past National Commander of the Sons and is serving as chairman of the 75th Anniversary Steering Committee. In the late 1920’s, many American Legion posts across the country began organizing local programs in an effort to involve the sons of World War I veterans in civic programs and patriotic activities. Different posts gave different names to these groups, such as “Junior Legion,” “Sons of World War Veterans,” “Sons of American Legionnaires,” and “Legion Heirs.” The nation’s first S.A.L. charter was given to Robinson Squadron 133 in Indianapolis, IN in 1933. “We want this to be a yearlong celebration,” says Stillwell. “We’re asking squadrons to look for a variety of fun ways to recognize the fact our organization is 75 years young and still going strong. We’re also planning a special celebration to be held at the National Convention next summer in Reno, NV.”
