Newark Takes Delaware American Legion Baseball Title

Newark had to win two on Wednesday to take the Championship and earn a berth in the American Legion Baseball Mid-Atlantic Regional, in Colonial Heights, Virginia August 14th.

First they beat Post 28 Warriors 9-7, then overwhelmed the Delvets 9-3.

These 8 teams will be playing the Delaware State American Legion Baseball Tournament beginning August 2, 2008 at both Soldier Field, Delaware State University and Reed Field, Wesley College. The official Tournament Bracket can be found here.

Wednesday's Game (7/30)

Delvets 5, Oak Grove Thunder 3: Delvets pitchers Curtis Wallace,  Scott Dougherty,Kevin Hopkins and Andrew Baczkowski combined for a 2-hitter.

Dougherty picked up the win while Baczkowski got the save. Delvets offense was led by Curtis Wallace 2 hits 2 RBI's including a double, Jack Cardinal and Tim Rosser also had RBI doubles for Delvets.

Andrew Baczkowski scored twice and Curtis Wallace went 2-3 including a two bagger.and scoring on a back to back double by Tim Rossier. Oak Grove offense keep the game close on pitching by Nick Ciafre who only gave up three earned runs to the on seven hits. Delvets 4 pitchers only allowed 3 hits. Keven Hopkins got the win and Andrew Baczkowski got the save. John Longo, Sam Manelski and Cory Tierney had RBIs for Oak Grove.

2008 Delaware American Legion Baseball Scholarship

The American Legion Baseball Scholarship is an annual award by the National American Legion Americanism Commission to a baseball player in each department who demonstrates outstanding leadership, scholarship, character and citizenship, and who has a demonstrated need for funding to continue their education beyond high school. Players are nominated by their respective team managers, the winner is selected by the Department Baseball Committee each August.
