Week 8 [7/25 - 7/30] Game Recaps

Games Played: 7/26  7/27  7/28  7/29



Wednesday's Game (7/30)

Delvets 5, Oak Grove Thunder 3: Delvets pitchers Curtis Wallace,  Scott Dougherty,Kevin Hopkins and Andrew Baczkowski combined for a 2-hitter.

Dougherty picked up the win while Baczkowski got the save. Delvets offense was led by Curtis Wallace 2 hits 2 RBI's including a double, Jack Cardinal and Tim Rosser also had RBI doubles for Delvets.

Andrew Baczkowski scored twice and Curtis Wallace went 2-3 including a two bagger.and scoring on a back to back double by Tim Rossier. Oak Grove offense keep the game close on pitching by Nick Ciafre who only gave up three earned runs to the on seven hits. Delvets 4 pitchers only allowed 3 hits. Keven Hopkins got the win and Andrew Baczkowski got the save. John Longo, Sam Manelski and Cory Tierney had RBIs for Oak Grove.

Tuesday's Games (7/29)

Talk about taking it down to the wire....
The final seedings of the State tournament were not settled until the 3 games below were finished. Post 1 locked up a #4 Seed and 2nd place in the North, R.C. Dupont finishes as the #6 Seed. Newark will be seeded #5, and Stahl locked up a #2 Seed with their win.

DE Post 1 - 10, R.C. Dupont Post 18 - 7: (McKean HS) Post 1 clinches 2nd place in the North and the #4 Seed in the State tournament with a win over R.C. Dupont.

Post 25 Middletown Firehawks - 9, Newark - 8: (Smyrna HS) Newark rallied in the third to capture a five-run lead, only to be matched by Post 25’s five-run rally in the fourth inning, and the game went into the seventh inning with Newark leading by one run. 

In the bottom of the seventh, with runners at first and third, David Press sacrificed for Post 25 and brought in a run to tie the game at eight. Two batters later, Elliott Stein hit a single to bring in the winning run.  Bill Morton had three RBI’s for Newark, and Adam Poplos hit a two-run shot in the fourth inning for his second homer in two games.  It was an energized game, and an appropriate way to end regular season play. Newark finishes 2nd in the Central, and will have the #5 seed in the State Tournament

Stahl Post 30 - 12, VFW 3420 Christiana - 8: (Wilson Field) 2B: Stahl - Beaston  3B - ReynoldsZach Beaston had 4 RBI's and Heath Johnson had 3 runs scored for Stahl while James McAllister had 2 runs scored for VFW. Stahl secures the #2 Seed in the State tournament with the win.

Monday's Games (7/ 28)

Fox Post 2 - 6, Post 6 Patriots - 5: (Wesley College) Fox Post 2 secured the #1 seed in the Delaware American Legion Baseball tournament as they scored 5 runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-0 lead over Post 6 in the final game of the season for both teams. Post 2 batted around as Joey Babuca picked up 2 of his 3 RBI's on the night with a single to right center. Babuca also scored the final run of the inning as part of a double steal. Bobby Brown had earlier driven in a run and he scored on a throwing error.

But the Patriots were not finished at bat either. Garrett Eskridge led off the inning with a single down the line to left, then after a fly ball out, Dustin Richards singled to center. A pair of fielder's choice plays and an error loaded the bases for James Smith (1 RBI) on a fielder's choice, Trent Passwaters (2 RBIs on a double to center) and Chad Sturgeon (2 RBIs on a double to right center. Joe Diana held on however, striking out Lance Kelly and getting Garrett Eskridge to fly out to right.

Fox Post 2 had scored a run in the 2nd when Joey Babuca singled in Danny Gato leaving the final score 6-5.

Next stop for both teams is the State Tournament. With the win Fox Post 2 all but locked up the #1 seed in the annual event that starts Saturday at Wesley College.


Post 25 Middletown - 14, VFW Post 3420 - 10: (Glasgow HS) Post 25 jumped out to a seven-run lead in the first inning and maintained the lead for the rest of the evening.  VFW fought back and put up ten runs of their own, with a three-run shot off the bat of Chris Bianchino, and a two-runner hit out of the park by Jim McAllister.  Adam Poplos hit a two-run homer in the second for Post 25 and had five RBI’s, and Ryan Gerlitz solo home run.

Sunday's Games (7/27)

Newark 13, Post 6 Patriots 6 (Game 1) (Seaford HS) Derek Marshallsea got the win and doubled in the game. Tyler Husfelt and Bill Morton both Tripled. Kevin O'Connor batted 3 for 4, scoring 2 runs and making 6 RBIs. For Post 6, Steve Sharff batted 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs. Morton and Marshallsea both had 4 strikeouts in the game.

Newark 11, Post 6 Patriots - 6 (Game 2) (Seaford HS) Not a pretty game, as both teams committed 4 errors, as rain closed in. Post 6 kept chipping away at the Newark lead, but the 4 run 7th took the game out of reach. Doubles: Newark: Bill Morton, Jordan Oncay, Rob Mooney and Derek Marshallsea. P6: Eric Sharff, Steve Sharff. Kevin O'Connor batted 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs. Rob Mooney batted 3 for 4. Tyler Husfelt scored 3 times in the game.

Saturday's Games (7/26)

Stahl Post 30 - 2, Newark - 1: (St Mark's HS) In a classic pitcher's battle, Stahl Post 30 took advantage of a couple of Newark Post 10 mistakes to score single runs in the fourth and seventh innings.

Newark struggled at the plate and failed to deliver with runners in scoring position. Bryan Perkins struck out five in seven innings for Stahl allowing just one hit. Jordan Oncay also struck out five but allowed seven hits over seven innings in the loss. The win gives Stahl First Place in the Central Division with one game left to play. 

Post 6 Patriots 4, Oak Grove Thunder 2 (Game 1): (Seaford HS) Oak Grove got on the board first, was Korey Hearn struggled with control, and allowed a lead off walk by Rayzel Martinez,  but Hearn settled down and allowed only one more run in the game.

Sam Manelski kept the Patriots off balance through 3 innings, but in the fourth inning Trent Passwaters line a double to right center, followed by Eric Sharff's single to left. Lance Kelly reached on an error. Passwaters scored from third on a wild pitch, and Eric Sharff stole home on a double steal. T.J. Wisseman drove in the third run on a ball hit sharply to short where the only play was at first.

In the 6th, Wesseman singled home Lance Kelly to earn his 2nd RBI.

Post 6 Patriots - 12, Oak Grove Thunder - 1 (5) (Game 2) (Seaford HS) The Patriots scored 2 in the 2nd, 2 in the 3rd and 8 runs in the 4th inning to beat Oak Grove in 4 1/2 innings in the 2nd game. Lefty James Smith kept Oak Grove off the scoreboard until the fifth inning, and still pitched a 9 strikeout 2 hitter. His performance was only marred by 4 walks.

In the 3rd inning, leading 2-0 thanks to T.J. Wisseman's 3rd RBI on the day, Oak Grove had gotten two outs when Eric Sharff doubled down the right field line. Lance Kelly followed with a triple, scoring Sharff, and then scored on a wild pitch. Kelly had 3 RBIs in the game.

In the 4th inning, Tim Szymanski really struggled with control, Walking one batter, and hitting two more as the entire Patriot lineup reached base. After Szymanski hit Steve Sharff with a pitch, Todd Neal came in and gave up a hit to Trent Passwaters, hit Eric Sharff forcing in a run and setting up for Lance Kelly's two run single to right center. Tyler Ruark picked up one more RBI on his second fielder's choice of the inning, and Patriots were up by 12.

In the top of the 5th, Oak Grove loaded the bases with one out on a single, and error and a walk, but Smith buckled down and struck out Kyle Schmoyer, then got Sam Manelski to hit a weak shot to first to end the game on the 10 run rule. Clark Anderson scored off a Kyle Maloney Fielder's choice, but it was too little, too late for Oak Grove.

Post 25 Middletown Firehawks - 8, VFW Post 3420 Christiana - 5 (Game 1): (Smyrna HS) Both teams put up two runs in the first two innings, but Post 25 broke the game open with a five-run rally in the fourth.  Brad Alexander had two RBIs, and Pat Hoye struck out eight for Post 25.  Chris Bianchino scored three times for VFW.  Jay Croft made base in the fourth inning after breaking his DeMarini aluminum bat in half (a sight never seen by any of the players, coaches or spectators).

Post 25 Middletown Firehawks - 4, VFW Post 3420 Christiana - 3 (Game 2): (Smyrna HS) This defensive battle saw both teams up and down throughout the game.  Ryan Gerlitz had two RBI’s for Post 25, Andrew Fortner scored two runs on the day, and Jay Croft had eight strikeouts.  Chris Bianchino scored two of VFW’s three runs.

Fox Post 2 - 4, R. C. DuPont Post 18 - 1 (Game 1): (Wesley College) In a pitching dual Danny Gatto beat RC DuPont. Danny  had 12k's and gave up no earn runs for the win.  In the fifth inning Danny Gatto got Fox Post first hit off Kyle Cooper, follow by a walk to Derrick Parker, and with two outs Joey Babuca hit a 3 run homerun to make the score 3 to 0. Final score 4 to1 Fox Post. Chris Dischert went 2 for 3 to led RC DuPont.

Fox Post 2 - 13, R.C. DuPont Post 18 - 3 (Game 2): (Wesley College) RC DuPont took a early 2 to 0 led. In the bottom of the second Fox Post tied the game at 2 to 2. In the bottom of the third Fox Post scored 8 runs on 2 walks, 4 hit batters, 2 errors and 2 hits. The game went 5 inning as Fox Post scored 3 runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 13 to 3 win.

Delaware Post 1 - 5, Post 3 Milford Red Sox - 1 (Game 1): (Milford LL)  Post 1 wins game 1.

Delaware Post 1 - 5, Post 3 Milford Red Sox - 0 (Game 2): (Milford LL) Post 1 wins 2nd game of 2 downstate.

Post 28 Warriors - 11, Delvets - 8 : (Game 1): (McKean HS)
