The American Legion Department of Delaware Baseball
Committee is pleased to announce that Timothy J. Hopkins of Felton,
Delaware will be the recipient of the 2008 Delaware American Legion
Baseball Scholarship Award.
Hopkins is a 2008 graduate of Lake Forest High School who ranked 20th
his class of 162. He was team captain for the Lake Forest Baseball,
Swimming and Diving and Varsity Soccer. He was awarded the DIAA Scholar
Athlete Award for participation in 5 sports; Football, Basketball,
Soccer, Swimming and Baseball. He earned All Conference recognition in
Soccer and Swimming and Diving and Baseball.
On the baseball diamond, he earned 1st team All-Conference recognition,
was Honorable Mention All-State. He played on the Carpenter Cup Delaware
South team. He earned the DIAA Scholar Athlete award for Baseball 3 of
his 4 years at Lake.
He served on the Student Council all four years and was the Vice
President and Senior Representative his senior year. He has participated
in several school sponsored fundraisers for groups such as Make-A-Wish
Foundation, American Diabetes Association and the Delaware Special Olympics.
He plans to attend the University of Delaware beginning in the Fall of
2008, majoring in Biochemistry. He hopes to eventually persue a career
in the medical field.
Off the field, Hopkins is a member of the Trinity United Methodist
Church where he maintains a 15 year perfect Sunday School attendance
record. He is in his 2nd term as the President of the Lake
Forest-Murderkill Leo Club. He is a member of the National Honor Roll
and has earned Distriguished Honors at Lake Forest all four years. He
was granted membership in the National society of High School Scholars
in his Sophomore year. He is also the recipient of the Jefferson Award
for Public Service, and Lake Forest's Mike Adams Award.
The American Legion Baseball Scholarship is awarded annually by each
Department (State) to a High School graduate or College Freshman who is
the "most deserving player" in their respective league. The Award is
based on leadership, scholarship, character, citizenship and financial
need and can only be awarded to a Legion sponsored player who will
attend college in the fall.
Players are nominated by their team managers, recommended by their local
American Legion Post commander and must provide transcripts, and other
information. Final selection is made by the Delaware Baseball Committee. |
